Now is a great time to check on your furnace before you need it during the winter. If you can determine now that you need a fix, you can save yourself a lot of stress later. You don’t want to be stuck shivering at night under a mound of blankets because you didn’t check on your furnace back in October. Here are some signs of concern that show that your furnace might not make it through winter
Strange Odors
It’s okay if your furnace sometimes smells like fuel especially if you’re just turning it on after months of disuse. However, these smells should dissipate before too long. When you inspect you furnace, if it smells terribly of fuel or a smell doesn’t go away after a while, you may have a problem. The solution isn’t so straightforward to this issue. It could be everything from dust, to a gas leak, or dead pests. You’ll want to talk to an HVAC professional before proceeding.
Pilot Light Problems
If you didn’t know, the pilot light of your furnace is the flame that lights the rest of the machine up. You need your pilot light to be reliable so that your system can perform consistently and safely. The important thing to look out for here is the color. The flame should be a constant blue. If it flickers or is orange or red, you have a problem that could lead to more serious issues. It needs to be addressed immediately because the unit is more likely to damage itself or your home with a faulty pilot light.
