Causes of Poor Air Quality
There are many causes of poor indoor air quality; some of these causes include:
Pet fur and dander
Dirty air filters and air ducts
Chemicals that are found in plastic, adhesives, and even some cleaning products
Houseplants
This might seem crazy, but just as plants use carbon monoxide as food, they also use other chemicals that are released into our homes. Some of these include benzene and formaldehyde. These chemicals are often found in products we use every day and therefore might not be wary of, including cleaning products, gasoline, and tobacco smoke.
Ventilation
There are two main ways to improve air quality through the use of ventilation, naturally and with fans.
Natural
You can achieve natural ventilation by opening your windows or doors to allow fresh air to circulate throughout your home. You might be hesitant to do this in the middle of summer, but keep in mind that you don’t need to leave them open all day long, just in the early mornings and the evenings.
This will allow fresh air to circulate throughout your home so that you aren’t stuck with stale and musty air all summer long.
Fans
Ceiling fans and exhaust fans are another great way to improve ventilation in your home.
Exhaust fans work best in bathrooms and kitchens where there is a lot of heat and moisture. They work by extracting heat and moisture from the air leaving you with dry and cool air instead.
Ceiling fans are best for bedrooms and living spaces or any place where you spend a decent amount of time in your home. Make sure that they are turned onto their “summer” setting so that they rotate counterclockwise and force air down into the room rather than toward the ceiling.
