Problems with your heating and air conditioning system can make your Savannah, Georgia, home less comfortable and increase your utility bills. If you don’t repair HVAC trouble, it could cause an inconvenient breakdown or even damage your home. You can improve your HVAC performance and stay comfortable by changing dirty air filters, checking your thermostat, and cleaning and sealing your ductwork.
Changing Dirty Air Filters
Eventually, your HVAC system’s air filter will become clogged with dust, dirt, pollen, mold, and other contaminants. This forces your system to work harder, increasing your utility bills and making breakdowns more likely. It also spreads pollutants around your home and makes allergies and asthma worse. Check your air filter once per month and change it at least every three months.
Checking Your Thermostat
If your thermostat is close to a warm, sunny spot, an air register, your oven, or a drafty door or window, it won’t be able to measure the temperature in your home accurately. The components in your thermostat could also be dirty from the dust in your home. Your HVAC system can’t keep you comfortable if your thermostat can’t measure the temperature. You may need to have a professional move your thermostat to a better place. If it’s not working at all, you could have a wiring problem or perhaps need new batteries.
Cleaning and Sealing Ductwork
Dust, dirt, mold, pest droppings, and other pollutants accumulate inside your ductwork over time, lowering your system’s efficiency. These substances can spread through your home and cause poor indoor air quality. Leaks in your ductwork can also increase your utility bills and let more contaminants into your ducts. Open an air register to look for dirt inside the duct and look for leaks or gaps in your basement or attic. An HVAC professional can clean and seal your ductwork.
